Beginner's Guide

Everyone is always asking, "What is the Internet?" It's almost easier to explain what it is not. It is not a large supercomputer in some undisclosed location controlling the worldwide computer network. The alternate term, World Wide Web, comes much closer to describing what it is - a dynamic and ever changing interconnection of computers and technology. This global mesh of phone lines and computers, fiber optics and cables includes everything from a little mail server in Bangalore, India to the supercomputers at MIT to the computer you are using right now.

The unique thing is that the Internet is what you make it. It can be a research tool for a high school student, the quickest way to get the new baby's pictures to the proud grandparents, or just pure entertainment. There is literally a world of information, technology, communication, and enjoyment out there on the World Wide Web.

Internet America wants this to be a pleasant journey for our new customers. This Beginner's Guide will help get you started, teach you the rules of the road, and point you in the right direction. Where you can go then is limitless.

This Beginner's Guide focuses on the software suite that Internet America provides free to our customers. These pages can be read here on line, or, for your convenience, they have been designed so that you can print them out for a hard-copy reference.
